Synopsis

This course covers techniques for server-side scripting using the Perl programming language.

Prerequisite: Basic understanding of HyperText Markup Language (HTML)

Recommended Textbook: Perl and CGI for the World Wide Web, Elizabeth Castro, Peachpit Press, (1999); ISBN 0-201-35358-X.
All students will be given computer accounts on Internet Institute IIUSA computers.

Schedule

Session 1
Introduction to the World Wide Web; client-server interaction; HyperText Markup Language (HTML); Introduction to Common Gateway Interface (CGI). Introduction to the Perl programming language. [Castro: Chapters 1-5; and parts 1 and 2 of IIUSA-519 curriculum.]

Session 2

CGI forms; CGI input and output; file handles. [Castro: Chapters 6-15; and Part 3 of IIUSA-519 curriculum.]

Session 3

Input and output, File handles, "Web site in a file" concept. [Part 4 of IIUSA-519 curriculum.]

Session 4

SQL database queries. Exporting from Microsoft Excel into comma-delimited (.csv) format. Password protection. Socket programming.
